Middle Georgia is building a robust STEM talent pipeline driven by early classroom experiences and innovative programs. Houston County School District is helping lead these efforts by implementing new STEM initiatives from elementary to high school. With support from the Middle Georgia STEM Alliance, which provides resources for robotics, teacher training, and hands-on activities, these combined efforts ensure that students across our region’s 11 counties are well-prepared for tomorrow’s innovation economy.
Nurturing Talent: Houston County School District’s Bold Steps in STEM Education
The Houston Accelerated Scholars Program (HASP) highlights Houston County School District’s commitment to exceptional STEM opportunities for high-achieving students. Designed for advanced high school learners, HASP was launched with 85 students in the 2024–2025 academic year. It quickly grew to 188 in 2025–2026 – experiencing a 120% increase in its first year. This increase signals that students are seeking more challenging STEM coursework.
Students from high schools throughout the county meet at the Houston County Career Academy for two extended class blocks. This creates a collaborative environment that supports the growth of STEM education. The program is advanced and designed for accelerated completion.
Part of the program is the district’s partnership with Middle Georgia State University. This allows students to take two courses that are both AP and dual-enrollment. The aligned curricula allow students to test for AP credit and earn college credit in a single-semester course. The pace is intense, but the rewards help students compete for scholarships and admissions to elite universities.
The vision and impact of HASP go beyond academics. HASP students build a network of driven peers from across the county. These relationships are as valuable as the coursework.
Bringing students together at one location enables advanced STEM courses to be taught by one expert teacher, maximizing resources while bringing together high-achieving students. The district’s model is efficient, fiscally responsible, and designed to deliver broader impact with focused investment.
Houston County is also investing in STEM for younger students. Six elementary schools are piloting a STEM “special,” giving students dedicated time to explore and discover STEM topics through activities.

Dr. Elgin Mayfield, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, emphasizes the challenges posed by the rapid evolution of technology, “We’re teaching students in the world they are currently in, while predicting and preparing them for the world they will live in the future.” Being nimble ensures that Houston County’s motivated learners will be challenged, supported, and equipped with the tools they need to reach their full potential.
Expanding Opportunity: Middle Georgia STEM Alliance Scales Impact Regionally
Local efforts already underway in the region are being amplified by the Middle Georgia STEM Alliance. As Executive Director Bob Herrmann shares, “Thanks to funding from Georgia AIM, we’re able to provide robotics kits, which help students in the region compete in GeorgiaFIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League, and FIRST Tech Challenge. Over the past three years, we’ve supported over 50 student teams across all 11 counties. Several of these teams have advanced to state-level competitions.”
Collaboration is key. In partnership with the Museum of Aviation’s Middle Georgia Robotics Institute, the Alliance offers a FIRST LEGO League “Teach the Teacher” initiative. Experts have trained 33-40 elementary and middle school teachers each year for the past three years. These teachers return to their classrooms better equipped for STEM instruction, leading to more students experiencing effective hands-on learning.
The Alliance also works with STARBASE Robins, a Department of Defense program, to deliver robotics kits and on-site support. This ensures that even more students have the opportunity for hands-on STEM experiences, resulting in increased classroom engagement and interest in STEM careers.

The commitment to STEM in Middle Georgia is evident. By connecting passionate educators with strategic partners, Middle Georgia is continuing to build on its solid STEM programs swiftly and thoughtfully. As these efforts expand, they are opening doors to brighter futures and ensuring our communities are ready to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.
